Jurrien Timber, an Arsenal defender, is reportedly hopeful that he will make his eagerly anticipated return to the first squad during Saturday’s Premier League lunchtime match against Bournemouth.

After joining the team from Ajax, the Netherlands international won the Community Shield in his first senior game. However, the ACL injury he suffered during his Premier League debut has kept him sidelined for more than eight months.

But Timber’s recuperation proceeded as expected, and early this month, following several weeks of first team training, he received the all-clear to resume competitive play with the Under-21s.

On April 22, the 22-year-old played 45 minutes at left-back in the Premier League 2 tie with Blackburn Rovers and scored a spectacular goal in his first game back in an Arsenal uniform.

However, Timber did not take a chance in the North London derby victory against Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend, instead playing an additional 70 minutes in the youth team’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool.

The Evening Standard says that Timber is targeting a first-team return in this weekend’s matchup with the Cherries at the Emirates after surviving the two Under-21s matches without incident.

The coaching staff of the Spaniard will closely evaluate Timber to ascertain his availability for the North London derby, following Mikel Arteta’s admission that the Dutchman was nearly included in the senior team.

In an effort to hold Manchester City at bay for the time being, Arsenal will field a fully-fit contingent against Bournemouth if Timber is approved to join the senior squad on May 4.

The Gunners are still one point ahead of the defending champions in first place after their exciting 3-2 victory over Tottenham; should they defeat Andoni Iraola’s team, that lead would momentarily grow to four points.

But with one game remaining, City, who host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night, still have a chance to win the premier league.

While supporters hoping that Timber would duplicate his incredible goal against Blackburn this weekend may be disappointed, the 22-year-old’s anticipated comeback would assist in resolving Arteta’s selection dilemma, which has plagued him all season.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jakub Kiwior, and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all failed to establish themselves as starters at left back in 2023–24, despite the versatile latter’s strong showing in that capacity when given the opportunity.

But Tomiyasu’s never-ending fitness problems have continued to bother him this season, while on the other flank, neither Zinchenko nor Kiwior—a centre-back by trade—have been as consistent as Ben White.

Timber’s 22-year-old achievements at left-back for the youth team and in his summer games against Man City and Nottingham Forest suggest that’s where his North London future rests, albeit it may be too soon to consider the 22-year-old for weekly Premier League starts.

Although there have been rumours that Arsenal may look to acquire a new left-back during the summer transfer window, if Timber can maintain his fitness and—more importantly—prove his value to Arteta before the end of the season, the Gunners won’t have to squander their money.
