Barcelona Eyes Mason Greenwood: Potential Summer Transfer
The 22-year-old moved to Getafe on loan for the season after the 20-time English champions warned him over the summer that he had no future at Old Trafford.
With 13 games in all competitions, including two goals and three assists in La Liga, Greenwood has been in outstanding form for the capital team.
Real Sociedad and Valencia are rumoured to be interested in signing the attacker permanently, and Getafe’s president has stated that his goal is to do so next year.
Barcelona is reportedly closely monitoring the issue and has sent scouts to observe him in action throughout the 2023–24 season, according to talkSPORT.
Atletico Madrid is reportedly keeping an eye on the situation as well, given that Man United is expected to allow him to depart permanently at the end of the current campaign.
The forward was detained on suspicion of rape and assault at the beginning of the previous year after a woman made claims against him.
He was then detained again on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.
Although there is no longer a case against Greenwood, he was also charged with attempted rape, participating in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm.
It is also reported that Greenwood had anticipated playing for Man United again this season.
It’s thought that the Red Devils first decided to bring him back, but they later decided against it in response to the public outcry.
Recent rumours have suggested that Greenwood would return to Man United’s starting lineup, although given the delicate nature of the situation, this is still regarded as extremely unlikely.
In 129 appearances for Man United in all competitions, the attacker has tallied 35 goals and provided 12 assists. He is under contract with Erik ten Hag’s team until June 2025.
It is also believed that several Premier League teams are closely monitoring the situation; nonetheless, it would come as a great surprise if he signed with another English team.
For the Red Devils, Greenwood scored 17 goals in the 2019–20 season. He scored six goals in the first half of the 2021–22 season before he was suspended by the club.
