Levi Colwill is expected to be absent for Chelsea‘s Premier League match against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Colwill has spent most of his first full season in the senior ranks at Stamford Bridge playing left-back, despite his preference to play centre-back.

Although the academy graduate has made 24 starts and three replacement appearances across all competitions, he has amassed some of the most minutes by a Chelsea outfield player in 2023–24.

When Colwill was selected in the starting lineup for the FA Cup fourth round matchup against Aston Villa last Friday, he was set to make his twenty-fourth start.

Alfie Gilchrist was called up to replace the 20-year-old, who was forced to leave the team after escalating a minor injury during the warm-up.

Following the match, head coach Mauricio Pochettino stated that he anticipated the England international to recuperate in time for a crucial match at Anfield, given the team’s five-day turnaround before travelling to Merseyside.

The Evening Standard reports that since Colwill did not take part in Monday’s workout, that might not be the case.

Colwill is unlikely to reclaim a spot in the squad for the match against the Premier League leaders, even though it is stated that he might still be taken into consideration if he is able to play on Tuesday.

Gilchrist was added to the team at the last minute to replace Colwill against Villa, but Ben Chilwell would probably take Colwill’s position this time.

After suffering a hamstring injury on January 23, Chilwell played 65 minutes against Middlesbrough before being left off the field as a substitute against Villa, as Pochettino sought to give him more time to heal.

Given that Malo Gusto did not play for the club on Monday, Pochettino may have to use Benoit Badiashile in the heart of the defence alongside Thiago Silva and shift Axel Disasi to right back.

Despite making a noteworthy comeback to training on Monday, Christopher Nkunku—who hasn’t played since the end of 2023—will, at most, be considered for a spot on the substitutes’ bench.

Chelsea is three points outside of the top six in the Premier League standings going into their matchup with Liverpool, who they previously faced in the EFL Cup final in February. Chelsea is now seated in ninth place.
