In a candid interview, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad shared his insights and experiences managing senior players like MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ajinkya Rahane during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Gaikwad, who took on the captaincy in his maiden season, revealed how he handled the responsibilities and the dynamics within the team.

“I felt good right from the start of the tournament. I am very approachable to all teammates whenever needed, and they always support the team in whatever way required,” Gaikwad stated.
“I wouldn’t say it’s difficult as all of them are very understanding. All the senior players that are part of the team are great to be with. Their experience always helps with match situations.”
Gaikwad’s Stellar Performance with the Bat
Despite the team’s overall performance, Ruturaj Gaikwad emerged as CSK’s top run-scorer in the tournament.
He amassed 583 runs in 14 matches, boasting an impressive average of 53.00 and a strike rate of 141.16.
His contributions included one century and four half-centuries, making him the second-leading run-getter in the ongoing edition, trailing only behind Virat Kohli.

Learning from the Best: Dhoni’s Influence
Gaikwad credited MS Dhoni for instilling a balanced approach in him. He highlighted the importance of staying neutral and not getting overly excited or disheartened, a lesson he learned from the former captain.
“Being neutral is something that I have learned from Mahi bhai. Not getting too excited about anything or being down by anything is the right approach that I have picked.
While batting, irrespective of being captain or not, my approach is always the same. Doesn’t really change a lot. You cannot plan to become leaders, so being good team players and putting the team first will always stand a good chance to be one,” Gaikwad explained.
Addressing the Rumors: Differences with Ravindra Jadeja?
When asked about his relationship with Ravindra Jadeja, Gaikwad dismissed any rumours of discord.
He clarified that there were no significant differences and that the senior players’ experience and support were crucial in navigating the season.
“There’s always speculation, but in reality, the environment in the dressing room is very positive.
Ravindra Jadeja and I share a great professional relationship, and his experience has been vital for the team’s strategy and morale.
We focus on the team’s goals and work together seamlessly to achieve them,” Gaikwad revealed.
