Before the January transfer window ends, Manchester United is reportedly attempting to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, an Everton centre back.

The defensive line at Old Trafford will be altered this season as Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire’s futures are unclear, while both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ contracts expire in June.

It’s likely that Lisandro Martinez will be the only centre defender at the team returning for the upcoming campaign, although as part of the rebuilding process led by new minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a few more players in that position may be added.

Branthwaite, who has impressed for Everton in the 2023–24 season, is reportedly of long-term interest to Man United.

Erik ten Hag’s team is reportedly trying to sign the Englishman before the January transfer window ends on Thursday night, according to Corriere dello Sport.

According to the source, Everton has indicated that they would be willing to allow Branthwaite depart for a move for £40 million with bonuses because of their financial difficulties.

The defender is reportedly admired by head coach Ten Hag, who is ‘actively pressing’ for a transaction to be finalised before the winter market ends.

The 21-year-old’s terms at Goodison Park are set to expire in the summer of 2027, and he only signed a new contract there in October 2023.

Since entering the starting lineup at the end of August, Branthwaite has been a vital member of the Everton club this season. He has made 25 appearances across all competitions, including 19 in the Premier League.

After joining the Toffees from Carlisle United in 2020, the defender spent time on loan at PSV Eindhoven and Blackburn Rovers before making his debut for his Merseyside club.

The England Under-21 international, who has assisted Everton in keeping clean sheets in their previous two Premier League games, is reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid as well.

Due to budgetary constraints, Man United head coach Ten Hag announced last week that his team would not be making any additions before the end of the January transfer window.

Despite the defensive ailments the Red Devils have suffered this season, Martinez, Varane, Maguire, and Evans should be fit for Thursday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
