Matthijs de Ligt Considering Move Away from Bayern Munich
Many teams fought for the centre-back’s signature as a result of his stellar play for Ajax; it’s thought that Man United tried to sign him in the summer of 2019.
But in the end, De Ligt moved to Juventus, playing for the Old Lady 117 times across all competitions until arriving at Bayern in the summer of 2022.
The DFL-Supercup and Bundesliga were won by the Netherlands international in his 43 appearances during his debut season at Allianz Arena; however, he has only been allowed to play in 12 games this season.
Due to his injury issues this season, De Ligt has only managed to finish two Bundesliga games in the 2023–24 season.
With a contract at Allianz Arena expiring in June 2027, the 24-year-old’s future is now up for discussion, with Bayern Munich reportedly open to a summer sale.
Man United is reportedly thinking about rekindling their interest in him, and there have also been rumours that Arsenal is closely monitoring any developments pertaining to his future.
De Ligt is open to a summer transfer, according to Sky Deutschland, since he isn’t ready to be Bayern’s backup centre-back.
He is currently below Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae in the standings. Bayern is also the front-runner to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, and the Uruguayan international’s arrival at Allianz Arena may render De Ligt unnecessary.
If De Ligt stays at Old Trafford, Man United head coach Erik ten Hag is reportedly resolved to fight for a reunion this summer. Erik ten Hag had De Ligt at Ajax.
The futures of Raphael Varane, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof are all uncertain, leaving Lisandro Martinez as the only Red Devils centre back who can be counted on to be with the team next season.
Thus, it is anticipated that Man United will prioritise finding a new centre back this summer. Given Bayern’s seeming eagerness to transact, this might put the 20-time English champions in a great position.
With William Saliba and Gabriel having excellent seasons, Arsenal doesn’t seem to need a new centre back. However, the Gunners are reportedly keeping an eye on De Ligt’s circumstances, as high-ranking officials at the Emirates Stadium are rumoured to be fans of the former Ajax player.
