Premier League: Newcastle United vs. Luton Town – In their Premier League match on Saturday at St. James’ Park, Newcastle United and Luton Town want to extend their respective highs after making waves with impressive victories over the week.

The Hatters thrashed Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0, while the Magpies tore down the walls of the Villa Park stronghold by defeating Aston Villa 3-1 last time out.

Before Tuesday’s match against Villa, Newcastle defender Fabian Schar had attempted 73 attempts in the Premier League without success, like people waiting a long time for two buses to arrive at once. However, in that match, he needed just two shots on goal to record an unexpected brace.

The Swiss centre-back opened the scoring with an instinctive header from Kieran Trippier’s corner. Then, seven minutes after the break, he was in the right spot at the right moment to poke home Anthony Gordon’s goal that rattled the crossbar. Alex Moreno’s own goal sealed the victory.

A thrilling conclusion would be set up by an Ollie Watkins finish, but in contrast to the animal kingdom, the Magpies overcame the Lions to hand Unai Emery’s team their first Premier League home loss of the year and to win three straight away games across all competitions.

Due to their winter struggles, Eddie Howe’s team may no longer be able to qualify for the Champions League twice in a row, but the Magpies are still hoping to finish in seventh place and qualify for the Europa League or Europa Conference League, at least until they play Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday night.

Even though Howe’s team has a perfect record on the road in 2024, the Magpies have lost three of their last four home games, including their last two Premier League encounters with Nottingham Forest and Manchester City. The visitors have the best memories of their most recent meeting.

Even if Newcastle’s performance at Villa Park was commendable, Luton Town, led by Elijah Adebayo, stole the show on Tuesday night as the Hatters recorded their greatest Premier League victory to date against Brighton, writing a few pages in club history.

Adebayo started the Hatters’ goal rush with just eighteen seconds remaining. Three minutes later, Chiedozie Ogbene joined in, and the former finished a fantastic treble of goals—Luton’s first in the Premier League era—in an incredible four-goal rout of the Seagulls.

Luton has temporarily escaped the relegation zone thanks to Tuesday’s incredible win, and they lead 18th-place Everton by one point despite having played one more game than Rob Edwards’ crop. This victory may have been inspired by the emotional return of captain Tom Lockyer to the training ground earlier in the week.

In addition to helping them scramble to safety, Luton’s thrashing of Brighton increased their winning run to three games and their run of unbeaten games to five in all competitions. Edwards’s team has not lost any of its past four away games.

Even though the visitors have lost 16 of their previous 21 league trips to St James’ Park and are still searching for their first away clean sheet of the season, they managed to hold off Newcastle on December 23 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Kenilworth Road, just seven days after Lockyer’s terrifying on-field collapse.

Just before the half, Villa’s star striker Alexander Isak was substituted due to a groyne injury; however, the severity of his problem is yet unknown. Schar made a brilliant play in front of goal at the perfect moment.

Howe may be without both of his recognized centre-forwards owing to Callum Wilson’s calf injury should Isak’s issue keep him out of action over the weekend. Additionally, fellow strikers Joelinton (thigh) and Harvey Barnes (ankle) will not be fit for the match.

In the worst-case scenario, either Gordon or Miguel Almiron—who is staying with the team despite brief ties to Saudi Arabia—will fill in as Newcastle’s central defender.

Sandro Tonali (suspended), Nick Pope (shoulder), Matt Targett (thigh), Elliot Anderson (back), Joe Willock (calf), and Jamaal Lascelles (calf) also missed the midweek victory, though the latter is in the running to return.

Issa Kabore’s Burkina Faso suffered a heartbreaking loss to Mali in the Africa Cup of Nations last-16, meaning that the Manchester City defender on loan might make his homecoming on Saturday. Luton was celebrating their thumping of Brighton on Tuesday.

Jacob Brown’s knee ailment might also heal in time for the weekend, but captain Lockyer still has a long way to go in his recovery, and Marvellous Nakamba (knee) and Mads Andersen (calf) are also out of the running.

If fit, Edwards will undoubtedly choose to start with the same lineup from their thumping of the Seagulls in the middle of the week, but Andros Townsend, a former Newcastle player, may come in to rotate the forward line if needed.

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:

Dubravka; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Miley, Guimaraes, Longstaff; Murphy, Almiron, Gordon

Luton Town possible starting lineup:

Kaminski; Bell, Osho, Burke; Ogbene, Barkley, Lokonga, Doughty; Clark, Morris; Adebayo

Our Prediction for this match 2-0 or 2-1 won by Newcastle United
