Premier League: Nottingham Forest vs. LiverpoolNottingham Forest and Liverpool will play again in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon at the City Ground following differing outcomes in the FA Cup.

The young Reds celebrated additional knockout success with a 3-0 victory over Southampton, but the Tricky Trees were eliminated from the cup after losing 1-0 to Manchester United in their fifth-round match.

Nottingham Forest had rode their luck to even make it to the FA Cup last 16, where Man United would present their toughest test yet. They needed extra time to overcome Blackpool in a third-round replay before destroying Bristol City in their fourth-round rematch.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team tested Andre Onana multiple times at the City Ground on Wednesday night, so it wasn’t for lack of effort on his part.

However, unlike Matt Turner, the Cameroonian goalkeeper cut an unbreakable figure between the sticks as Casemiro’s skillful header from a Bruno Fernandes free kick punched the Red Devils’ ticket to the quarterfinals.

The Tricky Trees can now only concentrate on the Premier League relegation battle, since their hopes of making it to Wembley were dashed in a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa on February 27. At least now, their hopes of playing at Wembley have burned out.

Santo’s team has dropped to 17th place in the standings, just four points ahead of Luton Town despite having played one more game than the Hatters.

Only one of their previous six Premier League games has resulted in a win. This is due to Everton’s point deduction being lowered from ten to six.

But after breaking through the Villa Park net twice, Forest has scored more than once in each of its previous three Premier League games.

They have also scored in all of their games in the top tier under Santo, despite only keeping one clean sheet during that period.

The children are more than capable of handling Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, whose academy products shone in the last moments of their EFL Cup victory over Chelsea before taking centre stage at Anfield when Championship promotion contenders Southampton visited the city in the middle of the week.

Liverpool naturally had to defend a bit against the Saints after being forced to field a few of their academy protégés due to their double-figure absence list.

However, Lewis Koumas’s deflected strike and Jayden Danns’ incredible double in front of the Kop sent the Reds to the quarterfinals, where Forest’s rivals Man United await.

Comparing his young players to 17-year-old darts prodigy Luke Littler, Klopp’s ecstatic smile said it all as Liverpool’s budding stars destroyed the Saints as the Reds advanced to their fifth straight tournament success ahead of their Premier League comeback.

Ibrahim Sangare (knee), Ola Aina (unspecified), and Willy Boly (unspecified) were all absent from the match against Man United due to injuries they sustained at the Africa Cup of Nations. Santo has not provided an estimated period of recovery for them.

Nuno Tavares, an Arsenal left-back on loan, has also missed many weeks of action due to a thigh injury he sustained against West Ham United in February. Chris Wood is unlikely to return before the end of March.

Former Liverpool player Taiwo Awoniyi, who scored the game’s lone goal in this very match last season, leads the attack in Wood’s absence.

However, Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has three goals in his last four Premier League games, is expected to take Divock Origi’s spot up front for the Reds.

When asked if he thought Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Darwin Nunez would make their comebacks against the devastated Reds this Saturday at the City Ground, Klopp responded with a succinct three-word response, “I don’t know.”

Wataru Endo (knock) and Ryan Gravenberch (ankle), who were taken off the Wembley turf on a stretcher, are in the same situation as the EFL Cup final victims.

Andrew Robertson became ill prior to Southampton’s victory, but he may be well enough to play on Saturday.
