Premier League: West Ham vs. Burnley: In Sunday’s Premier League encounter, West Ham United hosts Burnley at the London Stadium. Both clubs will try to respond to recent defeats.

In the first leg of their Europa League last-16 match, the Irons lost 1-0 to Freiburg on Thursday, while Vincent Kompany’s team lost 2-0 to Bournemouth the previous weekend.

Michael Gregoritsch’s goal in the 81st minute would win Freiburg the match, allowing the Germans to exact revenge for their two Europa League group stage defeats to West Ham. However, there was the usual VAR dispute during Thursday’s first leg at the Europa-Park Stadion.

David Moyes’s team appeared to have a chance to equalise from 12 yards out deep into stoppage time when referee Alejandro Hernandez jogged over to the pitchside monitor to review a possible handball.

However, in an uncommon move, the official stuck with his original call and did not point to the penalty spot.

Moyes was undoubtedly dissatisfied with the referee’s call, but the Hammers may still rally from a one-goal disadvantage, particularly if their previous Premier League goal-scoring exploits are any guide for what Freiburg should expect in the English city.

The Europa Conference League winners, who had only defeated Brentford on their ninth try of 2024, put on a late show to defeat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park last weekend.

As a result, they are now two points ahead of Newcastle United in seventh place in the Premier League standings.

The Irons now aim to correct their midweek errors and secure a 10th win from their past 11 Premier League games with newly-promoted opponents. They have not lost such a fixture since October 2021.

The Irons are still capable of qualifying for European football via one of two pathways this season.

Last weekend, Burnley welcomed two sides to Turf Moor that had not won a Premier League title in 2024 in an attempt to rekindle their survival bid and make Bournemouth look over their shoulder. However, Kompany’s squad was made to pay for yet another careless outing.

The Clarets dominated the first half, with Justin Kluivert scoring the lone goal. However, as Burnley kept trying but couldn’t find the back of the net, Bournemouth eventually took advantage once more, with Antoine Semenyo making sure the Cherries would return home with their first three-point haul of the year.

With 11 games remaining, Burnley is currently 11 points outside of safety and faces an instant return to the Championship as Bournemouth handed the Clarets their fourth straight defeat in the top division, following defeats to Liverpool, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace.

Even though the playstyle that worked well in the second division isn’t working this time, Kompany is still trusted by the board and supporters. The Belgian will now try to repay their faith by leading Burnley to their first victory in ten games since their victory at Fulham in December.

That Craven Cottage victory, however, has been followed by five straight away losses in all competitions (four of which have seen the Clarets surrender at least three goals). In November, Moyes’s team prevailed 2-1 at Turf Moor courtesy of a last-minute strike from Tomas Soucek.

Due to a groin issue, Aaron Cresswell had to replace Emerson Palmieri midway through the second half of Thursday’s match against Freiburg. With less than 72 hours to play, the former Chelsea player is probably going to miss this one.

Maxwel Cornet, who had a hamstring injury, is sure to miss the match, but Nayef Aguerd, who was a question mark before the first leg, was nowhere to be seen in Germany and might join Emerson in the infirmary.

Although it appears that Cresswell and goalie Alphonse Areola will undoubtedly make a comeback to the starting lineup, there may be fewer changes made further up the field until Moyes determines that Michail Antonio and Kalvin Phillips’ fresh legs are needed.

Regarding Sunday’s visitors, Josh Brownhill, the midfield pivot, can be called upon once more by Kompany after serving a ban in the defeat to Bournemouth. As a result, Josh Cullen’s brief appearance in the starting lineup should come to an end in the capital.

Though Jordan Beyer (thigh) may make a comeback before the end of the month, Burnley’s injury situation has not changed. Aaron Ramsey (knee), Luca Koleosho (knee), Lyle Foster (surgery), and Nathan Redmond (thigh) are all still sidelined.

Zeki Amdouni should be brought back in immediately for the former after Kompany’s choice to pair Jacob Bruun Larsen with David Datro Fofana did not go as planned last weekend. However, Vitinho was a threat in a more advanced position and might start on the right again.

West Ham United possible starting lineup:

Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Mavropanos, Cresswell; Soucek, Phillips; Bowen, Ward-Prowse, Paqueta; Antonio

Burnley possible starting lineup:

Trafford; Assignon, O’Shea, Esteve, Taylor; Vitinho, Berge, Brownhill, Odobert; Amdouni, Datro Fofana

Our prediction for this match 2-0 or 3-1 won by West Ham
