Tottenham Hotspur is allegedly facing a deadline from RB Leipzig to exercise their option to sign Timo Werner permanently.

During the January transfer window, the former Chelsea player unexpectedly returned to the English capital and signed a loan deal with the Lilywhites that would last until the end of the season.

Although Werner’s initial stint in the Premier League was hit-and-miss, he has made a solid start to his career at Tottenham, winning eight games at the top level and scoring two goals while also setting up another.

Prior to scoring goals against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa earlier this month, the Germany international assisted goals against Brentford and Manchester United in his first two Premier League starts for Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Werner has only started one of Spurs’ previous four Premier League games, and he was only a second-half substitute in their 3-0 loss to Fulham this past weekend. Brennan Johnson has also been playing well lately.

Werner’s playing time may be restricted by Richarlison’s knee injury recovery from now until the end of the campaign, when Tottenham can activate a clause worth about £15 million to secure the 28-year-old’s permanent stay at the team.

Before making a choice, the North London team wants to watch how Werner plays out the rest of the season. Leipzig, on the other hand, wants a response before the 2024 European Championship begins, according to The Mirror, via the Daily Express.

According to the report, Leipzig would still be willing to let Werner permanently move to North London even if Tottenham decides not to activate his option. However, they would require a larger price from their English rivals.

The forward still has a little over two years left on his contract with Die Roten Bullen, and he will return to Leipzig for preseason if he doesn’t perform well enough to secure a permanent deal with Tottenham.

Following his breakthrough at the Red Bull Arena, Werner was traded for £45.3 million to Chelsea in 2020. However, he only stayed at Stamford Bridge for two years until Leipzig acquired him again for a far lower sum of £17.1 million.

Nevertheless, the German has not been able to resurrect his previous level of success; he scored nine goals in the Bundesliga in 2022–2023 and only two goals in 14 games for Die Roten Bullen in the first half of the current season.

Werner, 28, has not played for his nation since March 2023 as a result of this, and he was left out of Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany team for their forthcoming friendly with France and the Netherlands.

The fact that Tottenham chose not to sign a high-profile centre-forward to replace Harry Kane last summer may possibly be a factor in Werner’s chances of staying at the team.

However, Richarlison had a fantastic run of play prior to his injury, scoring nine goals in ten games between December 10 and February 3. Alejo Veliz will return from his Sevilla loan period at the end of the season.

The 20-year-old, who has only played 23 minutes in La Liga since signing in January, has yet to establish himself in the competition. This past weekend, they lost 2-1 to Celta Vigo, and he was not included in the starting lineup.
