Serie A: Genoa vs. Inter Milan Match Predictions: Inter Milan will play Genoa on Friday in an attempt to maintain their one-game advantage over the leaders of Serie A. With a victory, they would be declared the ‘Winter Champions’.

After defeating Lecce shortly before Christmas, Inter is now four points ahead of their closest rivals, Juventus, while their hosts moved farther clear of the drop zone by defeating Sassuolo.

Although ‘Campioni d’Inverno’ does not come with any hardware, the winners at the halfway stage of most Serie A seasons typically go on to win the Scudetto a few months later.

As such, Inter will try to increase the pressure on their rivals by winning the league for the fifth time in a row.

The Nerazzurri have won all four of their top-flight games without giving up a goal; they have defeated Lecce, Udinese, Lazio, and Napoli to strengthen their position as clear favourites to win the championship.

A few days after their dramatic elimination from the Coppa Italia, which they had dominated for two years, due to an extra-time meltdown against Bologna, Inter recovered in Serie A, defeating Lecce at San Siro thanks to goals from Nicolo Barella and Yann Bisseck either side of the half.

A new record was also achieved by Milan’s coach Simone Inzaghi, who saw his team score in 25 straight Serie A games. No other Milan manager had ever accomplished this feat.

Inter’s defensive record, nevertheless, may be even more remarkable this season because no team in the top five leagues in Europe has given up fewer goals (seven) and maintained more clean sheets (12).

They will now play their penultimate game of the year at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, where they haven’t allowed a goal against Genoa since 2018. In their last four visits, the Nerazzurri have won three times, tied once, and scored nine goals without receiving an answer.

Even though Genoa will likely face their hardest test since making a comeback to the major leagues earlier this year when the Serie A leaders arrive, Alberto Gilardino’s team has shown that they can handle life at the top.

Gilardino’s brief stint at the beginning of the season was to keep his team out of Serie B, and after 17 games played and 19 points earned, the former Milan striker’s team is expected to make it.

After holding Juventus to a 1-1 draw at Marassi in their most recent home game, Genoa mounted a valiant comeback last Friday against Sassuolo, where top striker Albert Gudmundsson scored from the penalty spot to tie the score. Caleb Ekuban then completed emphatically in the 87th minute.

The Grifone have now returned home, where they have only lost twice in the league this season and have won two Coppa Italia ties before being eliminated by Lazio at Stadio Olimpico.

This comes after they ended a four-match losing streak away from home.

With little than half of their comeback campaign remaining, Genoa, despite all of their potential, is still only six points ahead of danger. Their first 2024 matchup is against Bologna, who are now in great form, following their victory over Inter.

Lautaro Martinez, the top scorer in Serie A with 15 goals, will be absent from Inter again on Friday night due to a strained muscle. He is expected to return next week.

Marko Arnautovic and Marcus Thuram will probably go in up front, with Matteo Darmian continuing to cover for Denzel Dumfries, the visiting team’s wing-back.

After suffering an injury, Dumfries hopes to return to the bench; however, fellow wide receivers Juan Cuadrado (Achilles) and Federico Dimarco (adductor) are still out.

Whether Benjamin Pavard will push his way back into the side at Yann Bisseck’s expense is still to be seen.

With Inter’s star player out with an injury, Genoa will once more rely on top scorer Albert Gudmundsson, who has seven goals in the league so far, to provide upfront assistance for Ghanaian striker Caleb Ekuban.

Junior Messias, on loan from Milan, and Mateo Retegui (thigh) are both likely out, which limits Alberto Gilardino’s attacking options, but otherwise, he should have a complete roster to select from: Kevin Strootman, a Dutch midfielder, just made a comeback to the game after being sidelined.

Genoa possible starting lineup:

Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Dragusin; Sabelli, Frendrup, Badelj, Malinovskyi, Vasquez; Gudmundsson; Ekuban

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:

Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Augusto; Thuram, Arnautovic

Our prediction for this match 2-0 or 2-1 won by Inter Milan
