Kalvin Phillips has officially joined West Ham United on a loan from Manchester City.

The midfielder for the England national team signs a contract with the Hammers that is understood to feature a summer permanent move option. The deal is temporary and will last until the end of the current campaign.

According to reports, West Ham would need to shell out £40 million to recruit Phillips on an exclusive basis at the end of the current campaign.

After struggling to establish a consistent spot in Pep Guardiola‘s team at Man City—playing just 89 minutes of Premier League football all season and failing to earn a single start—the 28-year-old now plays at the London Stadium.

The defensive midfielder has reportedly drawn interest from a number of teams, but West Ham has now won the race for his signature.

It makes me very happy to be here. I’m extremely thrilled to get going now since there has always been a lot of speculation that I’m headed to West Ham,” Phillips stated on the team’s official website.

“I’m excited to be a part of the club’s second half of the season because there is so much to look forward to.”

“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”

“We are really pleased to bring a player of Kalvin’s calibre to West Ham United,” manager David Moyes continued.

“We have long been admirers of him and think he would give our team more strength and competition.

“Kalvin is a seasoned Premier League midfielder who plays for the England national team. We’re thrilled to have him join the team and are eager to collaborate with him.”

After leaving his childhood club, Leeds United, for Man City in 2022 for an alleged £45 million, Phillips was a member of the team that won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League last season.

In addition to winning the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup this season, he was a vital member of the England team that advanced to the Euro 2020 final.

But since he fell behind Rodri in the hierarchy at the Etihad Stadium, he has essentially been reduced to a bit-part role at Man City. He has only made 31 appearances for the team in all competitions, and as a result, his status in the England squad has diminished ahead of this summer’s European Championship.

Phillips, who will play for West Ham wearing the number 11 jersey, may make his Premier League debut on Thursday against Bournemouth.
