Granada has played 20 La Liga games this season, winning two, drawing five, and losing 13 of them. With 11 points, they are currently in 19th place in the standings, five points behind Sevilla in 17th place.
Due to their performance in the Segunda Division the previous season, the Andalusian team was promoted back to Spain’s top flight for the 2023–24 campaign. They will be looking to establish themselves at this level of football once again.
Despite being in the running for relegation at this point in the season, Granada has struggled for extended periods of time.

On January 10, Simeone’s team lost to Real Madrid 5-3 in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals, but they were able to exact some retribution in the most recent Copa del Rey match between the two teams.
After losing 4-3 to division leaders Girona on January 3, Atletico has not played in La Liga since. Currently placed fifth in the standings with 38 points from 19 games, they are not at the top of the Spanish league.

Securing a Champions League spot for next season is the minimum requirement for an Atletico side also chasing success in the Copa del Rey and Champions League this term. The Red and Whites are three points behind fourth-placed Barcelona and 11 from the leaders Girona, who have played a game more.
Atletico, who had only triumphed in three of their nine league away games this year, defeated Granada 2-1 at Wanda Metropolitano in August, but in their most recent trip to Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes in La Liga, they were defeated 2-1 by Granada in December 2021.
