The five-and-a-half-year contract that Swedish prospect Lucas Bergvall signed with Tottenham Hotspur from Djurgardens IF has been verified.

The 18-year-old, whose arrival was revealed on his birthday on Friday, is thought to have cost the Lilywhites about £8.5 million. He has pledged his future to Ange Postecoglou’s team until 2029.

After Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, Bergvall is Djurgardens third winter window acquisition. He will play for the club for the next five months before reporting to his new team on July 1.

Champions of La Liga Barcelona was first in the lead in their attempt to lure the midfield player away from Scandinavia, but Tottenham was able to subvert the Blaugrana’s offer in the closing stages of the January transfer window.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League, which is the best league in the world,” Bergvall stated in his initial media interview with Tottenham.

“It’s a very strong club with a youthful, driven team and an excellent management. It’s a pleasure for me to join this large club since they play some pretty terrific football that is incredibly entertaining to watch.

“Under the guidance of an incredible coach, Ange, it seems like a new chapter is beginning. He’s a fantastic guy that helps a lot of new players get their start on the big stage. Although I am aware that I am a young player, I still like to support the group.

“With my two brothers, football was everything when I was a kid. We used to spend a lot of time in the garden playing football. My father was a really good player in Sweden, and my mother was a first division player.

“I consider myself to be a box-to-box player who enjoys having the ball at my feet and advancing it into the field. I’m incredibly excited to take the biggest stage this time around.

Before signing a £770,000 contract to join Djurgardens in February 2023, Bergvall was an academy prospect at Brommapojkarna. He immediately made an impact in the Allsvenskan club’s main team.

The six-foot-one-inch midfielder, who was born in 2006, played all ninety minutes in each of his team’s final five games and finished the season with two goals and one assist in 25 top-flight appearances.

In a 2-1 friendly victory over Estonia on January 12, Bergvall won his first senior cap for Sweden by substituting in.
